Game 12 Sum War

$0.99

War, played with sums. Both players flip two cards, call the total, and the greater sum takes the cards — but only if you got it right. Two players, one deck.

Description

How it works

Split the deck. Both players flip two cards at once and call out their sum. Each checks the other’s answer. If both are right, the greater sum wins the cards; if only one is right, that player wins regardless; if neither is right, the cards go to the bottom of both decks. Play until a deck runs out. Making accuracy beat magnitude is what stops children from guessing high and hoping.

What you’ll need

  • One deck of numeral cards, or playing cards with kings and jacks removed (ace = 1, queen = 0)

Skills practiced

Addition within 20, comparing sums, and checking a partner’s reasoning — which turns out to be some of the best practice available.

Grade level

1st through 4th grade. Use only 0–5 to start, deal three cards each for three addends, or switch to subtraction or multiplication using the same rules.
