Game 23 Dirty Dozen

$0.99

A push-your-luck counter game. Roll under 10 and pay the distance to 10 into the bowl; roll 10 or more and take the lot. Snake eyes and everyone else pays.

Description

How it works

Everyone puts two counters in the bowl to start. On your turn you roll two dice and must say the sum out loud before doing anything else. Roll a sum under 10 (other than 2) and you pay the difference between your sum and 10 into the bowl. Roll 10 or more and you sweep the bowl. Roll snake eyes and every other player pays two. Last player holding counters wins. Saying the sum aloud first is the rule that makes it work — it forces the calculation into the open where it can be checked.

What you’ll need

  • Two dice
  • Twenty counters per player
  • A bowl for the pot

Skills practiced

Addition within 12, finding the distance to 10, and comparing a sum against a threshold.

Grade level

1st through 4th grade. The rules are easy to extend — add a doubles rule, for instance, to emphasise whichever facts you are working on.
